Persona Magazine: Where did you grow up?

Laurie Alabaza: I grew up in south east San Diego.

PM: What are some of your early influences that you feel affected your design style?

LA: umm….well coming from San Diego I was definitely effected by the skate culture we have here but most of my inspiration came when I was in New York. I really took in a lot of the culture there and it really had an impact on me.

PM: Prior to Hellz Bellz where did you get your start designing?

LA: I started as a graphic designer for the ladies department of Triple 5 Soul, from there I moved on to become the art director at Rockawear……which I worked at for about 3 years prior to starting Bellz.

PM: What do you feel Hellz Bellz brings to the fashion market?

LA: Well what we did with Hellz is to design it very differently from what was in the street wear market at the time. A lot of the designs that were out there were designed by men. So many times you would get shirts that had flowers and overly cute designs that they felt women wanted. Really what women want is cool progressive designs so I feel that Bellz fits that void.

PM:What are some of your company’s goals for 2009?

LA: My goal for this year really isn’t different then last year which is to grow the brand slowly. Maybe we will add more accessories to the line and possibly a men’s line.

The girl came up through the ranks the right way, gotta respect that. Like she says, this line is not for church, this is to make a statement ladies. Some of the garments feature ladies flipping the bird, as well as cuss words.

If you didn't know, I am a huge graf head. Been since I was a kid. Love to sketch, used to paint. Wayyy back in the day though. Not anymore. Got busted and that was it.Cant afford to anymore. Still nice with the paint can though. The SOURCE used to have this section called 'graf-flix' where they would display graff and thats what hooked me. I have a black pair of Vans that are similar to this, which I love and get tons of compliments on. Obviously these are very influenced by Visvim, as Gucci produced a pair of brown suede ones last season that I searched forever to find, but couldn't. If somerset gets these, their mine. Fuck the price tag.

Part of Gucci’s 2009 spring assortment of footwear, the established fashion house takes another stab at things with another Native American-inspired high-top. Previous releases have followed a similar stylistic route to the one seen here with this recent style keeping things simple with an all-white leather upper. The skirt and use of beads are decidedly Visvim-esque, however the silhouette seems to be the most important aspect here with a tight streamlined design

AllHipHop.com has confirmed reports of a second altercation between DJ Drama’s Aphilliates and members of the CTE family. According to Aphilliates Music Group president La The Darkman, DJ Drama was assaulted by members of Young Jeezy’s entourage last night (January 12), yet walked away from the incident unscathed. “There was a little scuffle. At a movie screening,” La told AllHipHop.com, “A little thing that got handled. Fake thugs with low self esteem want to pick on the DJ’s. We definitely didn’t initiate this though. DJs don’t go looking for beef with fake gangstas.” The statement comes after several reports surfaced of a squirmish between the crews last night during a screening of Notorious in the posh Buckhead section of Atlanta. The fight comes two months after La himself clashed with members of CTE outside of Radio One’s Dirty Awards in November. Both he and CTE recording artist Roccett addressed the situation, explaining that the argument was a result of comments made by Young Jeezy during a video interview. The widely circulated clip shows Jeezy surprisingly speaking ill of Drama, with whom he found tremendous success on the Gangsta Grillz mixtape Trap or Die.

The collaboration was arguably Jeezy’s introduction to a national audience. When the interview first surfaced, DJ Drama responded saying that it had to be some misunderstanding or misinterpretation.

DJ Drama also confirmed the scuffle, while representatives for Young Jeezy informed AllHipHop.com that the rapper was in the recording studio when the incident took place.

Those corporate “thugs” do what their boss tells them to do. DJ Drama better watch his ass before he gets shot leaving one of these events. Gotta love how Drama sticks to the code, though. No matter how many times they beat him down. SMH

THE SOURCE 1995 Year In Review..

I found this on another blog and it really brought back memories. Every year the SOURCE, back when it was still the be all/end all for hip hop mags, used to do a yearly review. I remember buying this issue at Harmony House at Lakeside mall and then i went to Olga's and read it while I ate. Dont ask how I remeber that, I just do. I had it still but I threw away all my old magazines about 4 years ago, which I now realize was foolish. BTW I own all the albums below! This brings such great memories back of all the amazing and classic music that came out that year. Included below are some of my favorite songs from some of those albums. Yeah i've been doing this hip hop shit longer than you. God I miss hip hop.

While the rest of the hip-hop world reviews 2008 and ponders 2009, I’ve been steadily sifting through the hip-hop world of 1995 and 1996. Right off the bat, I want to know if you think 1995 was better than 1994 based on the albums released in those years. Whether you think ‘94 was better than ‘95 or vice versa, ‘95 was a great year and I still believe it was Wu-Tang’s year of supremacy. It was also a good year for Loud Records since they released both Mobb Deep’s The Infamous and Raekwon’s Only Built for Cuban Linx. The owner of the label, Steve Rifkind, must have kicked himself for not finding a way to sign ODB and Gza as well. 1995 also saw Tupac release his best album (Me Against the World) while locked up, then Suge bailed him out and flew him straight to California to record 20 albums worth of material. Good hip-hop music was not only being released from just about every area of the country (check the fat tape and list of albums below) but it was getting consistent nationwide exposure even with the cancellation of Yo! MTV Raps and the beginning craziness of the East Coast/West Coast beef. This definitely shows in the 1996 issues of The Source with only two artists from the East Coast gracing the cover (Nas and Mobb Deep) in the entire year. But enough of my blabbering, just let me know, what was the BEST ALBUM of 1995 in your opinion?

Here’s a rundown of what’s been going on with Jeremy Piven and the Broadway production of Speed-the-Plow. Last year, Piven was signed on to make his Broadway debut in David Mamet’s Speed-the-Plow. After a few shows, Piven then decided he didn’t want to do it anymore and requested an early release due to exhaustion. His request was denied. In mid-December, Piven’s doctor wrote him a little note saying he couldn’t perform because he had “elevated levels of mercury” from eating too much fish. Piven is an avid sushi eater.

Backers of the show called BS and investigated Piven’s claim of mercury poisoning in an effort to “squeeze some money out of him.” Page Six says that Jeremy Piven has already been examined by another doctor, but Jeffrey Richards, the lead producer, would not reveal the results citing confidentiality. However, Jeffrey added ominously, “We’re in the process of discussing what our next step will be.”

Jeremy Piven should have come up with something better than mercury poisoning from too much sushi. That’s like saying I’m too tired to work because I’ve been making out with this model chick every night and I might have gotten mono or I might have herniated a disc from playing too much Wii.

NYE night Kat Williams was in a local Detroit night club doing an impromptu stand-up routine. Sooooo he starts going in on this one dude who was wearing a cowboy hat and matching boots. Spies in the house say the crowd was cracking up until Mr. Cowboy walked up to Kat and bitch slapped him across the face. They say Kat, who was without any sort of entourage, just sat in a corner smoking a cigarette and when someone approached him asking if he was alright, he answered, "Hell naw I ain't alright! Didn't you just see that nigga slap me!?"

The dude from Detroit who slapped Kat Williams spoke to Vibe Magazine and this is what he had to say about the night he put the smack down: “I was probably with like 16, 17 dudes, we were scattered out throughout the club. Basically we were just up in there having a good time.” Kat passed dude, who was wearing a cowboy hat and a pair of $5,000 alligator cowboy boots, as he headed to the stage. When Kat got on the mic and started to riff, things went south. “I wasn’t even paying attention,” dude said. “I was talking to someone else while he was doing it. And then he pointed at me. I walked over to a couple of friends of mine, and they told me, ‘He’s clowning you.’ So I walked over there and asked [Kat], ‘So what you say? I don’t play that joke shit.’ So he was like, ‘And what?’ And that's when dude laid hands on Kat. "He didn’t even admit what he said when I asked him. He was still on some comedy stuff after I slapped him, I swear. After I slapped him, he jumped back and he was still talking and it was some girls holding him back. It was actually some girls in the club grabbing bottles like they wanted to do something to me too, like trying to protect him. He stopped and actually grabbed a square and was trying to light his cigarette. It was on some comedy stuff to me. He was trying to get his square lit, he took like two puffs, and he tried to charge back at me. But at this time, the security was heading me towards the door.” The next day on Detroit’s radio station WJLB, Kat told radio host Dr. Darrius dude slapped him in an attempt to steal his jewelry, a fact dude denied. “We weren’t trying to get his jewelry. I wasn’t that drunk to not know what was going on. [Kat] told like 20 percent of the truth [on the radio]. I could understand if we were at a comedy club, or some shit like that, but we weren’t there for that. It was after-hours, niggas was drunk, feeling it, we wasn’t there for that. It wasn’t no comedy show we were at. He’s mad because my guy was looking more pimpish than him. I’d do it again if he say something like that. Damn I havent heard this in a minute! The best time was welcome weekend in 2003 at MSU when I was at PT's, the OLD PT's before it got remodeled and everyone cool stopped going and you used to be able to do WHATEVER you wanted..I was with my squad and we had listened to this all summer and the DJ randomly played it and we all lost our minds. Following an alleged fight with a member of Ne-Yo’s entourage, Jim Jones said Monday morning (January 5) he’s fortunate to be a free man. “I guess I got lucky,” Jones said after coming out of Manhattan’s 18th Precinct. “I got a DAT.” Jones was issued a Desk Appearance Ticket instead of a trip behind bars for the misdemeanor assault charge.

The altercation took place at the Fifth Avenue Louis Vuitton store, where police say Jones punched and kicked someone who was traveling with Ne-Yo. Although police have yet to release the victim’s name, Internet reports have widely identified him as a man named Vaughn, the brother of Tyran “Ty Ty” Smith, who works with Ne-Yo. Ty Ty is the longtime best friend and colleague of Jones’ lyrical nemesis, Jay-Z.

“I don’t know what this is for,” Jimmy said when asked about the fight. “All I know is I was shopping. I don’t know what happened.

“How my LVs [Louis Vuitton logos] look?” the Diplomat Capo, wearing a Louis V scarf, asked. “They say it was an incident at the store, but I don’t know.” Monday morning on Power 105.1 in New York, Jones’ mother called up to speak to morning radio host Ed Lover. Mrs. Jones acknowledged the altercation and called for peace in the hip-hop community.

“I’m tired of all these rappers not doing their jobs,” she vented. “They’re getting into all types of crazy stuff. … Your job is called ‘rapping’ for the audience, for the people. Get paid, and take your behind home.”

Jim Jones said the altercation gave him another sobering look at his life and career.

“Being a gangsta rapper or a ‘hardcore’ rapper, you find yourself stuck between a rock and a hard place,” he said. “It’s a thin line, because there’s things I’ve done in my career to get where I am today, and I’ve benefited off it. For me to make a transition and take my career to the next level, there’s some things I can’t obviously do anymore. What I mean by that is, you play the tough guy and put yourself into those positions, and things can happen. You end up like this, [with] a big inconvenience.

“Sometimes the notoriety works in your favor, but I shouldn’t be here at this point,” he continued. “As long as no one is physically doing something to you or being that much of an aggressor, sometimes you can let these things go. I’ve grown to realize that, and I see it’s not gonna be the same for me as far as my travels in this industry. My last few situations, it seems like I’ve ended up in jail and people have used that as a way to put civil suits on me. That’s the new wave of getting money. They say snitching is big business.” Jones has to appear in court February 4, a little less than two weeks before his next LP, Pray for Reign, hits stores February 20. The Harlem native says he’s ready to put the latest incident behind him.

“I really think I’m standing in the way of my own self,” he said. “I don’t believe it’s nobody else but me that’s gonna f— my career up, and I don’t wanna see that happen. … I’m done with beefs this year. I’m just gonna become a rapper. I’m just like Vanilla Ice and MC Hammer. I am a rapper. Leave me alone. I am defenseless. It’s to a point now if you slap me and I slap you back, you’ll be able to sue me.

Professor Ferenc Szasz argued that so-called rap battles, where two or more performers trade elaborate insults, derive from the ancient Caledonian art of “flyting”. According to the theory, Scottish slave owners took the tradition with them to the United States, where it was adopted and developed by slaves, emerging many years later as rap.

Professor Szasz is convinced there is a clear link between this tradition for settling scores in Scotland and rap battles, which were famously portrayed in Eminem’s 2002 movie 8 Mile. He said: “The Scots have a lengthy tradition of flyting - intense verbal jousting, often laced with vulgarity, that is similar to the dozens that one finds among contemporary inner-city African-American youth.
“Both cultures accord high marks to satire. The skilled use of satire takes this verbal jousting to its ultimate level - one step short of a fist fight.” The academic, who specialises in American and Scottish culture at the University of New Mexico, made the link in a new study examining the historical context of Robert Burn’s work.

The most famous surviving example of flyting comes from a 16th-century piece in which two rival poets hurl increasingly obscene rhyming insults at one another before the Court of King James IV. Titled the Flyting Of Dunbar And Kennedy, it has been described by academics as “just over 500 lines of filth”.

Professor Szasz cites an American civil war poem, printed in the New York Vanity Fair magazine on November 9, 1861, as the first recorded example of the battles being used in the United States. Professor Willie Ruff, of Yale University, agreed that Scottish slave owners had a profound impact on the development of African American music traditions.
Comparing flyting and rap battles, he said: “Two people engage in ritual verbal duelling and the winner has the last word in the argument, with the loser falling conspicuously silent.”
